Different Types of Communication
As a human being, the need to communicate is vital for you to live a normal life. Information is conveyed from one to another through different types of communication. The various ways of interacting also allow people to exchange thoughts and feelings. Therefore, these interactions are an inevitable and are a necessary part of socialization.
The different ways of communicating aim to create understanding about what you have to say. Although there are many means of transferring concepts and ideas with various sorts of messages, there are certain hindrances that can create a barrier to communication success. The main barriers are the complexity of the message and the ability of the receiver to decode the message.
Furthermore, communication is divided into three parts. These are words, voice, and body language. These parts come in different chunks, depending on certain factors and situations. In addition to that, the three can be used together in making a point and in enhancing the different forms of communication.
There are many different types of communication, and the major ones are verbal communication, nonverbal communication, and visual communication. Verbal communication, as the name may suggest, is the use of spoken words to create a dialogue between two people. To make this more effective, it should be merged with some of the other forms of communication.
The next type is nonverbal communication, which is achieved without the use of words. This can be done through the use of gestures, posture, facial expressions, eye contact, symbols, or a combination of any these. This type occurs more often than any other way of using your communication abilities and usually without your knowing. It also plays a vital role in many aspects of people’s lives.
Visual aids are the medium of visual communication. This type differs from the other forms of communication in the sense that it relies solely on things that can be seen or read. Ideas to be delivered to the receivers are given then through various visual forms, such as drawings, illustrations, signs, and many more.
Another aspect of visual communication is, of course, body language. Body language includes things like facial gestures and expressions. Body language also includes posture and even the position of the speaker on a stage. This stage positioning is called positional anchoring and it is used effectively by trainers and teachers who are in the know. All of these can be and are, used by really accomplished public speakers, entertainers and politicians.
One of the most powerful aspects of using body language is that it is not readily perceived. This is because it enters the unconscious part of the mind where it triggers responses that are hard wired into our brains. (This is the subject of a whole series of articles and I won’t go into this any deeper here)
There are other forms of communication which are more specific. Whichever one you pick from the different types of communication, you have to ensure that it will be effective in making your intended audience understand the message you wish to deliver. Communicating then is not only about sending out messages, but also includes the receiving and interpreting of the message that has been sent.
Communication Skills Enhance Relationship Satisfaction
When couples say they no longer communicate they mean that each one no longer feels heard and understood by the other. They are still communicating but it may be through silence, avoidance, yelling, put downs or many other ways that are hurtful. Although communication occurs between two people each person can only take responsibility for their own part. The changes that one person makes will affect the communication pattern of the relationship.
Five points to keep in mind when communicating:
1. What are you saying?
How is your tone of voice? Are you on the attack? Are you being defensive? What is your body language?
What is your attitude? There is so much more to communication than the words you are using.
2. How well do you come across?
If you really want someone else to get what you are saying you have to pay attention to how you come across to the other person. That means being able to both pay attention to what and how you are saying things and how it is being received.
3. Stay in the present
One of the hardest things to do is to truly stay in the present if one has been feeling not understood. The tendency is to mentally operate from the past or worry about the future. It is only in the present where we can initiate change. If you are working on how you come across you have to implement it in the present.
4. Experience the other person
You want to listen so you experience the other person. You want to sense their frustration, their passion, their body language, their pain, their contempt, or whatever else you observe. When you become aware emotionally of what is going on then you are truly listening. In addition to the words you will be experiencing the whole interaction not just the words.
5. Communication is in between people
This is the key to good communication. It is the ability to pay attention to ones own part while at the same time being objectively aware of how the other person communicates that leads to successfully resolving differences.
Good Communication For a Better Relationship
Any couple who wants to have a strong and loving relationship knows how important communication is. Although we are aware that good communication skills is the major single factor which decides the kind of relationships we build with others, a lot of us are still quite clueless about what it really is. Most couples complain about not communicating, but what really happens is that that they are no longer heard, acknowledged and given due importance by their partner. There is still communication; however, it is not made through love and kindness, but through antagonism, silence, evasion and many other negative attitudes.
There are many forms of communication, and good communication is just one of them. A person must have better understanding of oneself in order to understand one’s partner better. With understanding, one becomes more acquainted with one’s communicating techniques, as well as the other person’s, in order to work better as a team. Better communication is achieved not just by talking and hearing. Here are the ways in order to get the best out of any relationship through good communication: It is normal for a couple to have disagreements and conflicts every now and then. Arguments can be healthy; however, people tend to point fingers when things are not as smooth-sailing as they should be.
Sure, every person has his/her own faults, but there is no good out of blaming each other every time a problem arises. It is important to be able to take responsibility in re-evaluating one’s own actions and communication first, before pointing anything out in one’s partner. People often have a harder time accepting criticisms because no one wants to be wrong. However, communication is not about being right or wrong-it is about helping each other be more considerate of one another’s point of view, in order to avoid further misunderstandings and conflicts. The battle of the sexes is an age-old game that many couples play.
There is always a need to prove that one sex is far more superior to the other, so winning becomes rather important even in the communication process. It is a sad but ironic situation when a couple feels that communicating with each other is futile, when it is actually the main key to a healthy relationship. However, this is unavoidable because of the way many couples communicate; instead of reaching a level of understanding of each other’s wants and needs, most people make being right the whole point of the argument. Listening sounds like a very easy thing to do, but a lot of people actually fail to understand what it really is and often confuse it with hearing.
When a person listens, he/she is truly enthusiastic and interested in what the other person is saying. Although it is essential to hear out one’s partner, it is nothing if no effort is made to have an emotional connection with the other person. Listening is a skill which entails both in order to accomplish your relationship aspirations together. Sustaining a happy and healthy relationship is not that complex-couples just have to try to be open, sincere, non-judgemental and patient in communicating with each other.
Branding, Concept, Communication and Focus Testing
I’ve seen it all. The good, the bad and the ugly of Web site design. And the more I analyze what’s on the Web, the sadder I get, because the Web has become open game for Web site designers with bad taste and no plan.
On the other hand, there are many talented Web designers to choose from. But talent will only take one so far.
A designer has to understand and master the essence of design: Design with purpose, Create with purpose, and Implement with purpose.
As with the world of print, TV, and radio, a designer must design with four specific goals in mind:
Branding
Good branding makes the cash register ring. Take Fox News as a case in point. Unlike CNN or MSNBC, Fox strives to be a bit more edgy and bold — and they lead the pack. Their logo animation, bumper graphics, and over-the-shoulder graphics are bright primary colors. Even their music is a bit edgier with guitar riffs versus the subdued music tones of the other stations.
Concept
A great concept on a shoe-string budget will blow away a weak concept on a multi-million dollar budget any day. For example, how many truck or SUV commercials have you seen with guys careening through mud or snow-covered mountain passes as the words scream out “Chevy Tough” or “Ford, Built to Last.” I can’t believe executives at these car companies spend millions each year on poorly conceived advertising campaigns.
Now, see if you remember this one. A mother is about to drop her child off at school, and asks if he’d rather get dropped off at the curb instead of directly in-front of the school. The child says, “nah, that’s okay mom.” He steps down from the Hummer and strolls up to the school entrance while an older student, with his eyes glued to the Hummer, says “cool.” This is a “concept;” a very well executed concept. It strongly conveys an attitude. Even Hummer’s theme music has attitude. The branding and concept raises the Hummer’s image above the rest.
Your Web site or your client’s Web site should convey this type of branding and concept. Think outside the box. Look at other well executed designs for inspiration. Don’t look at the industry, look at the design. Just because you’re building a Web site for a golf course doesn’t mean you should only Google golf courses in your research. Look beyond. Here are some great Web site resources for creative inspiration.

Communication
During my career in broadcast graphics we would churn out graphics for the evening news. Many of them were “over-the-shoulder” graphics which appeared behind the anchor as they delivered the story. The main philosophy
I constantly ingrained into my design team was:“If it doesn’t read – it doesn’t work.” In other words, if the volume of the TV is turned off, the viewer should know what the story is about without the presence of text or title.
Your Web site should project that same philosophy. Ask yourself, does it immediately communicate my message? In television your message is “one click” away from the next channel. On the World Wide Web, you’re one mouse click away from a potential customer moving on.
If you own an e-commerce site, do you expend Web real estate endlessly talking about yourself, or do you get right down to business by featuring your products?
If you own an industry or business site, do you have fancy animation with glitzy music, or does your site convey a serious professional business image?
Make sure your Web designer is communicating well with the public. Solid thinking translated into clear messages works every time.
Focus Test
Want good feedback? Want good direction? Try a grassroots focus test.
Late one evening after some finger breaking work on some all important Flash animation, the cleaning crew entered my office. I asked, “What do you guys think?” They replied, “What is it?”
I was taken back. Ouch!!! I had fallen into the old trap of not being able to see the forest for the trees. This is an all too common problem among creative types. Design work tends to be a labor of love, and you can get too close to your project without seeing the big picture.
Get feedback, it’s the breakfast of champions. Ask your team, neighbor, spouse, significant other — ask anyone but yourself. And once you step out on the ledge, make sure you’re ready for negative feedback. Learn to embrace it and use it to develop into a better professional. Growing some thick skin will also be helpful.

Communication Can Be a Problem With Couples
How well do you and your boyfriend communicate with each other? The lack of good communication can be one of the big problems with relationships. A couple needs to be able to tell each other their feelings and have good open discussions. If one of them has a problem with the other it would be best to talk it over and get it out of the way instead of letting the issue simmer and getting worse.
Holding back an opinion or your anger over something concerning your partner will never get resolved and your relationship can suffer because you never bring it to their attention. They think all is well because they have not been told otherwise so they continue on the same course like everything is just fine.
You may find that your partner would be happy to be told of some issue you have if you presented it to them in the correct manner. If you tell them with an attitude they may resent you somewhat but in the end will get over it. Just the same tell them nicely.
Many relationships have ended because the couple lacked good communication skills between them. They also suffered from misunderstandings and jealousy over wrong info they may have. Someone can jump the gun and accuse the other of something without having the facts to back it up and they may be wrong.
So why not make your relationship strong by learning to communicate with your partner. Get to know them and maybe you will learn a little more about yourself in the process.
Communication Alarm System
After publishing my last article Listening Awareness, one of the comments I received was that although the article by itself was very good, we should also remember that there is more to good communication skills than just listening…it also involves being able to interpret body language.
How true! So this time around I want to help us become aware of it and learn even better communication skills by utilizing it.
So what is body language? It’s a subconscious attempt to create balance between feelings and appearances. It’s communication by movement or placement of our bodies such as our standing or sitting posture, facial expressions and gait. Try watching a TV program with the sound off and we’ll usually be able to interpret when a person is aggressive or surprised or dejected — that’s body language.
Granted, body language is not always fool proof because it should be interpreted in conjunction with what is being said and it can be affected by the speaker’s individual habits. It’s not a language in and of itself; it’s just a part of the communication spectrum. For example, if we see a person across the room crying, we probably won’t know if they are upset or joyful or frightened because crying can symbolize many different emotions.
Below are just some samples of body language and their possible interpretations:
Biting nails = Nervous, insecure
Drumming fingers = Restless, impatient
Rubbing both hands = Anticipating, impatient
Resting cheek on the hand = Thinking, evaluating
Folded arms across the chest = Disagreement
Eyes downcast = Guilt, boredom
Rubbing eyes = Disbelief, doubt
Rubbing the bridge of the nose = Uncertain, rejection
Resting the head on the palms = Boredom, despair
Head titled to one side = Interested, listening
Hands on hips = Aggressive, authoritative
Kicking foot while walking or sitting =Boredom
Leaning forward = Interested
Now, remember to take into consideration a person’s habits (if we know them). For example, when I fold my arms across my chest it’s usually because I am cold or evaluating with my head tilted. So that’s my point: body language is not one-size-fits-all in every situation.
However, if we become more aware of our own body language and habits, it will help us become more observant of others. In doing this we will be able to better judge if the person or people we are speaking with are paying attention, if they care about what we’re saying, if we’re hitting a nerve, or if they are not being honest with us. It’s a communication warning/alarm/alert system that we’re already equipped with if only we know how to use it properly. How cool is that?
How to Handle Barriers in Communication
Many employers wonder what is the cause for the organization to fail in some tasks. Often, the answer to the queries is easy: bad organizational communication.
Communication is a permanent challenge, which is why managers, supported by the departments of human resources, communications or public relations need to give much more attention to it. Problems that affect communication are becoming increasingly tough requiring sustained effort, and important range of knowledge and information.
A good identification of those barriers in the communication will guarantee success for the manager in solving communication problems.
Many of the problems that arise in an organization are a direct result of communication errors. These damage the anticipated communication confusion, misunderstanding or, more seriously, failure in fulfilling the tasks.
Barriers of communication are all those disturbances that may came up in the communication process and reduce the efficiency or employers.
In specialist studies are reported four major categories of communication barriers:
1. Barriers of language – the expression of difficulties leading to confusing phrases or words or meanings to different people involved in the act of communication. Also, the emotional state may influence receptor negative communication, message content being deformed. Another case is produced by use of words or confusing phrases or preconceptions.
2. Environmental barriers – the most common are those related to climate work inadequately characterized by high noise.
3. Barriers caused by broadcaster and the receiver position – often they occur when the image that the broadcaster or the receiver has about itself or is fake, accompanied by preconceived ideas or feelings much too strong.
4. Barriers to conception – assumptions, suspicions, hasty conclusions and routine process of communication, expressing the wrong message, lack of interest from the message receiver can produce dysfunctions in the process of efficient communication.
